quilt!

Yep, I finally made another quilt. My first was a few years ago and honestly, I wasn't sure I'd ever make another. Don't get me wrong, I like quilts. I do. They're just so. much. work. I get overwhelmed before I even start. I did manage to set aside my quilt misgivings long enough to make one to donate to a good cause - our local United Cerebral Palsy telethon. My kiddo has gone part-time to a preschool for the last 3 years that is associated with the UCP. Every year each class puts together themed gift baskets for a silent auction which goes on during the telethon. The theme for Syd's class was 'children's books' and a blanket was requested to go in the basket. I volunteered to make a quilt and this is what I came up with. I only managed to get a few quick photos before turning the quilt over which is a bummer but that's just how it goes sometimes. If you happen to be in Anniston, Alabama this weekend, stop by the telethon and check out the silent auction!

Design wise I wanted to do something a bit more complex than just patchwork squares but still easy enough to finish in a short amount of time so a chevron quilt seemed to best fit the bill. The biggest challenge for me was choosing fabrics. Harder than usual because the quilt needed to be gender neutral and I wanted it to appeal to as many people as possible. My usual color schemes probably weren't going to be the best way to go for this project so I went with primary colors. Another constraint was that I knew I wanted to use charm packs to help keep things simple and ended up choosing a PB&J charm pack by Basic Grey/Moda and paired it with a Bella Solids White charm pack.  I used this navy + white striped fabric for the binding after seeing this quilt by Kelby Sews. I think the binding is my favorite part of the quilt! Not shown is the backing fabric which is a yellow and white dot print from Joann. I didn't use a tutorial or pattern for my quilt but here is one I found if anyone wants to make one!

  3. You made such a good choice of fabrics, the result is awesome. I am thinking about making my second quilt too, and I think this chevron pattern might be a good one for me. Thanks for the inspiration. Sylvie

  7. I have now sent this post to a handful of girlfriends; this quilt is SO pretty. It embodies exactly why I like to craft: simple designs at their best. Very, very well done.
