diy photo backdrop. . .

I worked on a super quick and easy project last week! I've been using white foam core board for multiple purposes when taking photos. I like it best as a reflector and as a vertical backdrop but wasn't really loving it as a flat surface since it lacks texture and often isn't a true white. To keep things inexpensive and portable, I bought a piece of oak wood at the hardware store - it's 2 ft x 2 ft and slightly less than 1/4 inch thick and was under $5. I then painted a single coat on one side of it with white acrylic craft paint using a sponge brush. Now I've got a reversible backdrop with a bit of texture which I really like.

Aren't the bowls the cutest? I spotted them at Anthropologie while shopping with my mom and had to grab a few. At $2.50 a piece and a ton of colors to choose from, it was hard not to buy them all!

  1. Great idea! All these shots were done on a 2' square board?

    1. Hey Debbie! Thanks :) Yep, I used the 2' square board as the flat surface for the pics. I also placed a large piece of white foam core board behind one edge of the wood board as a vertical backdrop. You can see that best in the 2nd photo of the paint bottle, brush, and the unpainted board.

They had boards in larger sizes as well but I probably wouldn't have been able to fit those in my car!

  2. I love this idea. I have a piece of paneled wainscoting that I use as a backdrop but never thought to use it on the bottom for texture. I will definitely give it a try. Great photos and I picked up four of those bowls myself.

    1. Thanks! I've been thinking about getting some paneling too! There's so much great stuff at the hardware store for photography. So love the little bowls! I'm pretty sure I'll have to pick up a few more this week since I'll be passing Anthro on the way to an appointment :)

  3. That's a great idea!
I'm always looking for good white backdrops as I love simple and full of light photos.
I have an ikea kitchen cabinet door and that's what I usually use as backdrop on my photos.
