the best laid plans...

I had big plans for this past weekend. I was finally caught up on sleep from my adventures at Sewing Summit (awesome, btw) and was going to spend the weekend nights writing and posting my SS recap and doing some just-for-fun sewing. Well, as is often the case for parents, the kiddo had other plans. A trip to the urgent care clinic led to a rushed and somewhat scary trip to our local ER which then turned into an even scarier trip to Children's Hospital in Birmingham, AL via ambulance. We spent Saturday night and most of Sunday camped out in a hospital room before getting discharged. Upon discharge we were instructed to make sure we don't let the kiddo do anything that would result in her hitting her head as that could result in a dangerous brain bleed. Sure, no pressure!

It seems Sydney's immune system decided to rid her of most of the platelets in her body. An average count is 150,000 and Sydney's was about 5000 while at the hospital. Without platelets, blood can't clot properly so she received treatment to help boost her platelet count. Her discharge diagnosis was Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura or ITP, for short. It sounds and looks scarier than it is, I suppose. Let me tell you though...my kid was a trooper. She handled five blood draws and an IV much better than I anticipated. She should be back to normal soon, the petechiae and bruises are fading quickly, and this will most likely never happen again. Sounds good to me! In the meantime, we'll be trying to catch up on sleep and avoiding things like trampolines, swings, slides, bicycles...

I posted a few photos on Instagram/Facebook during the ordeal and just want to say thanks for all the positive thoughts we received from many of you!! It helped make a totally not fun situation a little less overwhelming :)

  9. my oldest son was born with low platets & had to spend the 1st wk of his life in the special care nursery (he's had no problems with platets since then)... I didn't know that a low platet count could just happen totally out of blue like that. So scary, but so glad to hear she is doing so much better. Take care.

  14. Wow---sounds like quite a weekend for your family! I'm so glad your daughter is doing better. My brother went to the hospital with ITP in college, while living in Japan---definitely a scary time for my parents. Hope you all have time to rest and recover!

  15. My sister came down with this her freshman summer in college, and it was terrifying. One morning she woke up and found a small mark on her arm, and by the next day she was covered in bruises from head to toe. It took a few months and a lot of treatment to bring her back to normal. I'm praying for your little one to get back to normal even sooner than that.

  16. I remember when I was a kid, I had a week-long fever. I took anti-biotics and vitamins but it did not help. We went to the nearest everett medical clinic and we found out that I was diagnosed with dengue. I was immediately rushed to the hospital and thank goodness for immediate care.
