business card diy: edge painting

Before heading off to Sewing Summit, I decided I wanted to make some new business cards to take along. I had a few different ideas but decided to go with mini cards from overnightprints.com and then edge painted them for a pop of color. I saw this post by Camille Styles about how she gilded the edges of her business cards with gold spray paint and used it as inspiration for my cards.

Not much to it really...I bought a small can of neon pink spray paint, gathered a few small rocks from the yard, grabbed my cards and some newspaper and got started. I had 100 cards and divided them into 3 stacks. I placed a stack on my newspaper and using a square ruler, I tried to even up the sides of the cards as much as possible by pressing the cards against the flat surface of the ruler. Once the cards were neatly stacked, I placed a few rocks on top to add weight. I then lightly sprayed around all 4 sides and let them dry about a minute between coats for a total of 3-4 coats. I think that's the key to getting a good results...not going overboard with the paint! The very top card will of course be covered with paint but I just used the same one for all 3 stacks. I think I "lost" about 10 cards in the process of painting. The very bottom cards tended not to fair as well as the rest.

All in all, a quick and easy project that helps add some visual interest to business cards. The thicker the card stock, the better results you'll get. Also, you'll want cards with very cleanly cut edges. I think using regular sized cards would be easier to work with vs the mini cards.

  7. I spent a lot of time digging on the internet for techniques and tips, but for the most part came up empty since professional edge painting appears to be a closely guarded secret. I’m actually a little worried that ninjas are going to shimmy down ropes and whisk me away to printing purgatory once I complete this post. Circle Services Leaflet Printers
