Sewing For Baby | Mini Moccasins

I don't really get to do much sewing these days (the baby is not much of a napper) but I've been wanting to try my hand at making some baby shoes for my bub. I finally got a chance this weekend! I used the Lil' Papoose Moccasins pattern by Peek-A-Boo Patterns with a few mods. Inspired by the moccs Abby | Sew Much Ado and Erin | Erin Always made using the same pattern, I made a front fringe piece to add to the shoes. I trimmed the side fringe pieces to line up with the edges of the heel part of the shoe but probably should have not trimmed quite as much since the elastic shows a bit. Or maybe the elastic just needs tightening up? Mine also turned out a bit narrower than the pattern simply because I had a tough time sticking with a 1/4" seam allowance on the curves. The moccs fit well though so it all worked out! My son is 6 months old and I made the size 3-6 months.

The suede I used is from Peggy Sue Also in the toast color option. In hindsight, I wish I'd ordered regular leather as the suede was kind of tricky to work with but I do love how it looks. All in all it was a fairly quick project. The hardest part for me was actually getting the elastic threaded through the shoes. I think using a thinner leather versus suede would have made that easier as well as sewing around the curves. You'll definitely want to use a leather needle and some Clover clips to make these - not sure I could have made the moccs without either of those.

I see making more of these little shoes in the future since they're a fast sew and so, so cute. Next time maybe in a grey leather?

  3. i made these too! The corners are tough, I agree. But somehow, they always turn out cute! My favorites for baby ended up being cotton with a flannel lining they were not as stylish as the suede ones i made but they were a lot easier to get on and off and still looked pretty cute!
