soleil dress | selvage designs. . .

I'm sharing a sweet dress I made this week using the Soleil Dress pattern by Selvage Designs! I stuck pretty closely to the pattern aside from using a woven fabric (rayon challis) for the skirt and omitting the ribbing/binding around the pocket edges. This pattern includes an option for an open back which is what I made. My favorite part might just be the pockets - apparently the kiddo liked them too because I couldn't get her to keep her hands out of them. That reminds me that I should probably  go check those pockets for flowers. . .

I'm in serious love with this floral print and felt that it really needed to be paired with a stripe. Both fabrics are from Wanderlust Fabrics but sadly looks like they are sold out of these particular prints.  The knit really was too lightweight for this project - I would recommend something a little heavier and less slinky. I was stubborn and didn't want to give up on the floral/stripe combo!

All in all it was a straightforward sew - the only "thinking" I had to do was to determine the length of binding to use around the edges of the bodice. Those dimensions are not included in the pattern due to the variations in stretch % in fabric types. I found the pattern to be true to size - I made a size 4 based on the measurements provided and it fit quite well.

  4. oooh i love the stripe/floral combo! and to me rayon challis almost feels like a knit, so that's another nice pairing - very flowy but still comfy. my daughter loves pockets too. :)

  6. Very beautiful. I've often wanted to do just that combination - a knit bodice with a woven skirt but am worried that the bottom of the bodice will lose all its stretch. Can you share how you sewed the skirt on? Just with a regular stitch after gathering?

    1. thank you! i didn't do anything special when sewing the bodice to the skirt - used a regular stitch once the skirt was gathered. the bottom of the bodice stretched out a bit but that was remedied after washing and drying the dress. next time i make something similar i want to try out some stay tape or clear elastic at the bottom of the bodice to stabilize it.
